OK, last week I bought COD4, and installed it. I cannot get Punkbuster to install, it continually errors out. The the install log is here:

The error I get after the installation is this:

Then after I get that error I try to test the installation of PunkBuster, and this is the log:

I have a trouble ticket in with Evenbalance, but they have not been the greatest help. I got a response immediately after I posted it, but now it has been 6 days since I have heard from them Sad . In addition, I have tried creating the missing files, and it still wont work. I have also made sure that PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB are allowed in my Windows Firewall settings. If anyone has any wisdom in this matter, would you share it?

I can't get punkassbuster to even show in my firewall but it plays.

Looks like your port for PnkBstrB is being blocked. Perhaps you need to open the ports on your router?

Do you have vista 64bit also?

your punkbuster coud be outdated for call of duty, or like what pwno said its being blocked somehow. Try uninstalling it then reinstalling it just in case its corrupted.

Punkbuster came with the game, so it's not out dated. I have windows vista64. I have checked in the windows firewall, and it shows it is allowed. I am at a loss. no one at Evenbalance has responded in 6 days, and I have tried ti get the to. Shocked I have installed and uninstalled PB numerous times, tried to manually create the missing files, but that didn't work. I have also tried uninstalling COD4 and reinstalling it. when I reinstalled, I got the same error "C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles\PunkBuster\\PnkBstrB.log' (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified)"

OK, I got an update here. I filed a new ticket and referenced my old ticket, and got a new response. Here it is:

"The "Valid Certificate" error means that the VeriSign certificate does not match the file it is signed with. Therefore the Punkbuster service files will refuse to load, reslting in this error. The most probable cause is malware (like a virus). Please scan your computer with a updated virus scanner and spyware scanner.

A free to use online scanner is available at the following website:

housecall.trendmicro.c...t_corp.asp
www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Run a few scanners and once it has found something, disinfect your computer. Microsoft Defender (free download) is one of the recommended spyware scanners (there are more, such as Hijack this and Spybot Search & Destroy):

www.microsoft.com/atho...fault.mspx

Also run the following tool, whic will restore the Widows certificates:

www.softpedia.com/get/...oyer.shtml"

I have tried the last one, and can't get it to work Annoyed I am trying a few different virus programs, and am having difficulty getting one to work well with windows vista 64 (it seems vista does not play well with others) The Kapersky scanner will ONLY work with IE, and not Firefox.

I will let the scanners do their thingy, whilst I sleep, and I will fill y'all in later.

If any y'all have any other suggestions, I will check 'em out.

wow Punkbuster staff doesn't seem to help much. You think that they would provide more than one solution. This doesn't seem like its you problem imo, but I could be wrong. Maybe you do have a virus.

Here are a couple things i have run across:

Go to evenbalance.org and download the pbsvc.exe file. This will install/reinstall the pb services file. I had the same problem and this fixed it.

Make sure that any anti-virus programs you have running (especially and older version of McAfee) are allowing the PnkBstrB.exe to get through.
This has happened to many people on America's Army (2.82) and CoD4.

From this website:http://www.infinityward.com/community/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=814a4bacd9ecac2b6909ab11e29ec37e&topic=14039.msg159952#msg159952

Or this:
Like geestar20 said, try updating PunkBuster. It's set to update automatically while you're playing, but sometimes needs to be updated manually. I've had many problems with PunkBuster and CoD4, and a manual update seems to always solve the problem/s.

Just some more ideas : )

Hey Double D, Your posts sounds very similar to my experience with P.B. For me this works . I made my own shortcuts to, COD 4 , both single player and multi player. Also made them for PB . {saved to the desktop} Always right click and run as an administrator . Start the P.B. first, then update every single time , then minimize it and let it run . Here is a link that helped me figure it all out . www.activision.com/ind...home|en_US go to support , pc ,cod 4 loads of , "stuff there"
Did you open ports in TCP and UDP ? Port # 28960 If you do a re-install make sure you search for PB and COD4 and remove all files for a complete and clean re install . o yes one more, if you get a error message about a bad code just remove the code from the menu area , restart and that works for me . Good Luck
